Ubicación

Puyango Petrified Forest is located in the south of Ecuador, in Las Lajas canton – El Oro Province and Alamor canton in Loja Province; they are separated by the Puyango River that is also works as the provincial border line.

It borders on the Andean Range to the north, and on the Amotape – Tahuín Range to the west.

The topography in the area is irregular; the lowest elevation is the one on the Puyango river-bed between 280 and 300 meters above the sea level. In Loja Province is the highest level is 1,173 meters above the sea level on Chirimoyo Hill, on the other hand the highest level in El Oro is 741 meters above the sea level on Banco de Ceibo Hill.
